Discovering DC: Leesburg

22.2.13

This edition of 'Discovering DC' features Leesburg, VA from the perspective of Carrie from French Toast Vintage!

What's your history with Leesburg, VA  and DC?
I was born and raised in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, but moved to Leesburg about 6 years ago to study Fashion Merchandising at the Art Institute of Washington. I worked at Annie Creamcheese in Georgetown as Assistant Manager for a year, and then South Moon Under in Reston for a year, before opening my e-commerce boutique French Toast Vintage.

Discovering Leesburg - What are your favourite places to shop/eat/go with friends/people watch?
Jasmine Chinese Cuisine - I like to go here for sushi because it is kind of a hidden gem and not very often packed, making it a quite place to catch up with friends over sushi and saki. It's even built in an old mill!

Firebirds Wood Fired Grill- Amazing happy hour with $5 martinis!

Vintage 50- Lounge atmosphere in this local brewery. I can't seem to get anything other than the Chicken Carbonara Pasta. Best Bloody Mary. Seriously.

Swoon- This boutique is very trendy and a good place to find accessories and their merchandising is really well done!

Black Shutter Antiques- If you are a vintage fiend like myself, you can get lost in this 20 room house filled with antiques. The top floor is where the clothing is and you can easily spend a couple hours there.

The Pink Shop- This shop is in a pink house and offers novelty gift items (diamond shaped ice cube trays anyone?) and Virginia souvenirs.

Perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon in Leesburg?
The perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon is to take advantage of the beautiful landscape and historic downtown here. I like to go for a run on the W&OD trail (it goes all the way to Alexandria!) and stop by South Street Under for a coffee and breakfast sandwich before heading home. I love to walk around the Leesburg Outlets to shop (Barney's, BCBG, and Off SAKS) and people watch. When the weather is warmer, Tarara Winery offers outdoor concerts to listen to while you enjoy a bottle of wine. To finish up your Saturday, stop by Razzle Dairy Bar and have an icecream cone swirled with flavors like cappuccino or cotton candy.
